Texas Tech, Leach negotiating extension (AP)

Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers says the school is negotiating a contract extension with Mike Leach, amid reports that the Red Raiders coach has met with the University of Washington about the Huskies' top job. Myers wouldn't confirm or deny newspaper reports that Leach was in Seattle this week to talk to UW officials.

ChiSox's Vazquez likely headed to Braves (AP)

The Atlanta Braves, in dire need for healthy veteran starting pitchers, have reached a tentative agreement to acquire right-hander Javier Vazquez from the Chicago White Sox in a six-player trade. The teams agreed to the trade Tuesday, two people familiar with the deal said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been finalized.

Red Sox give Pedroia 6-year, $40.5M deal (AP)

AL Most Valuable Player Dustin Pedroia and the Boston Red Sox agreed Wednesday to a $40.5 million, six-year contract. The deal includes a club option for 2015. He would not have been eligible for free agency until after the 2012 season. Pedroia led the AL with 213 hits, 118 runs and 54 doubles in helping the Red Sox win a wild-card berth.

Astros, Hampton finalize 1-year deal (AP)

Oft-injured Mike Hampton finalized a one-year, $2 million deal with the Houston Astros on Wednesday, hoping to resurrect his career in the place where he became a prominent big league pitcher. "Some of my fondest memories came in an Astros uniform," he said. "So it's a chance to return to some of those glory days." The contract includes $2 million in performance bonuses.

NFL suspends 6 players for doping (AP)

Unless the courts intervene, the Minnesota Vikings will have to make their stretch run at the NFC North title without their two stalwart defensive tackles. Kevin and Pat Williams, who have anchored a Minnesota defense ranked second in the NFL against the run, were among six players suspended by the league on Tuesday for violating the league's anti-doping policy.

Giants end Burress' year, Pierce to play (AP)

New York Giants' Plaxico Burress arrives at Manhattan Supreme Court for arraignment on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 in New York. Burress accidentally shot himself at a Manhattan nightclub Friday evening and was treated at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He was released Saturday.

The New York Giants expect Antonio Pierce to play in Sunday's game against Philadelphia while the team gathers information on the linebacker's involvement in a shooting that led to the season-ending suspension of star receiver Plaxico Burress.
