Smoltz has reached a preliminary agreement on a contract with the Boston Red Sox, a stunning end to his long career with the Atlanta Braves. The deal was expected to be finalized later Thursday Jan. 8, 2009.

John Smoltz and Brad Penny are on their way to the Red Sox. Rocco Baldelli was already in Boston, holding up his new jersey. After missing out on Mark Teixeira, the biggest free-agent prize of the offseason, the Red Sox were poised to make a series of smaller deals that would essentially complete their roster.

Cubs, OF Bradley wrap up $30M contract (AP)

Milton Bradley's talent is undeniable when he's healthy and that's why the Chicago Cubs gave him a $30 million, three-year contract to be their right fielder and a run producer in the middle of the lineup. It's the other issues that have often overshadowed his on-field accomplishments -- tantrums and angry outbursts throughout a decade-long career with numerous teams.

Nadal loses, Federer advances in Qatar (AP)

Top-ranked Rafael Nadal was eliminated from the Qatar Open on Thursday, while Roger Federer advanced to the semifinals of the tuneup for the Australian Open. Nadal lost to Gael Monfils of France 6-4, 6-4, and Federer saved three set points to defeat Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-2, 7-6 (6). The Swiss star trailed 5-1 and 6-3 in the tiebreaker, reeling off five straight points to win.

Florida, Oklahoma set to play for No. 1 (AP)

Career saves leader Trevor Hoffman closed his deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press the sides reached agreement Thursday Jan. 8, 2009 on a $6 million, one-year contract. The 41-year-old Hoffman had pitched for the San Diego Padres since 1993, but the team recently withdrew its offer for next season.

Crank up the AC/DC, Milwaukee: The Brewers have landed career saves leader Trevor Hoffman, solving a shaky closer situation that could have gone into spring training with no clear-cut favorite. Hoffman's agent, Rick Thurman, credited Milwaukee for being "diligent and aggressive" in its pursuit of Hoffman after Brewers players called to recruit him.

BCS officials: Current system legal (AP)

The BCS coordinator said,  Thursday Jan. 8, 2009, major college football's leaders feel the postseason system is in compliance with federal antitrust laws. Speaking to reporters, Swofford did not specifically address the Utah attorney general's threat of an antitrust lawsuit against the Bowl Championship Series.

Bowl Championship Series officials believe they're prepared to fend off any legal challenges. With the Utah attorney general investigating the bowl system for a possible antitrust violation, Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner and BCS coordinator John Swofford said the BCS has carefully considered the legality of its format.
