The Toronto Raptors have fired coach Sam Mitchell one day after the team absorbed an embarrassing loss at Denver. Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo says assistant Jay Triano has been promoted to interim coach. Triano's first game as coach is Friday night at Utah. Colangelo calls Wednesday's move a difficult but necessary step.

Flyers center Danny Briere will be sidelined four to five weeks with a severe groin strain. The Minnesota Vikings' Kevin and Pat Williams have gone to court to block their suspensions for violating the NFL's anti-doping policy. The star defensive tackles are seeking a temporary restraining order in Hennepin County District Court in Minneapolis.
